When Rocio Cortes, a bilingual teacher at Camey Elementary, stepped into her classroom for the 2023-2024 school year, she carried more than lesson plans and educational tools—she carried a vision. A vision of creating a space where her students could immerse themselves in the beauty of bilingual literature, explore diverse cultures, and grow as biliterate, bilingual, and bicultural learners. Through the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation and the SCHEELS Grant, she was able to fill her classroom library with current, engaging Spanish-language books that reflected her students' interests and linguistic needs.
“Thanks to the generous support of the LEF grant, I've been able to curate a vibrant and comprehensive private library tailored specifically to the needs and interests of my bilingual students,” said Mrs. Cortes. “This collection is brimming with modern and engaging titles spanning various genres and subjects, ensuring that every student can find something that captivates their imagination and nourishes their intellect.”
The updated library included contemporary fiction and informational non-fiction, all designed to inspire a love for reading while supporting academic growth. This classroom library did more than provide books; it opened doors to understanding, empathy, and collaboration among her students.
One of the standout achievements made possible by the grant was the implementation of a Buddies Reading Program. This initiative paired second and third graders with fifth graders, fostering mentorship and collaboration while reinforcing literacy skills. The program not only built reading confidence but also nurtured cultural appreciation and peer connections.
“These books not only cater to the linguistic needs of Spanish-speaking students but also serve as valuable resources for all learners interested in expanding their language skills,” Mrs. Cortes explained.
As the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation celebrates its mission to empower teachers and students, success stories like Mrs. Cortes’s initiative are a testament to the transformative power of teacher grants. Every dollar invested in education is an investment in the future, creating ripples of impact that will be felt for generations to come.
“The impact of this grant extends far beyond the classroom, empowering students to become lifelong learners and avid readers. Thanks to this donation, our students are not only becoming better readers but also building lasting connections with their peers,” said Cortes.
