LEF OFFERS MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS

Grant Recipients Lewisville, TX, August 25, 2010: Today the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation (LEF) announced their 2010 grant winners – local teachers who will put the award money to work in their classrooms. The grants, which ranged from $370 to $2,675, will help pay for classroom projects outlined in competitive grant applications. This year 58 teachers won grants, but they are not the most important winners; their students will benefit significantly, thanks to the enhanced educational opportunities provided by these grants to the Lewisville ISD.

“We’re pleased that so many excellent teachers have chosen to work in our District, and we want them to feel this is a place where they and their students can grow and achieve,” said Connie Pelphrey, LEF Executive Director. “We wish we could have awarded grants to all of this year’s applicants. They all have such amazing ideas on how to engage their students and help them succeed.”

Funded by individuals, businesses, organizations and other foundations, the LEF grants are awarded once a year to teachers across all grade levels and all disciplines. Since 1990, the Foundation has given a total of $521,000 in grants to teachers. This year, grants went to support a variety of innovative programs that promise to improve spelling and literacy, develop technical editing skills, and create an integrated understanding of science, social studies, and language arts, for example. One example, “Netbooks for Academic Success” grant was awarded to Maribel Cantu for Central Elementary 5th grade students.

“With Netbooks in my classroom, my students are going to have the world at their fingertips.  Each student is going to be able to become more proficient in each subject area, as well as in technology, through the use of the Netbooks.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to support my students’ learning with the generous grant from LEF.” – Maribel Cantu
